Formula Student Germany Registration
About eight team members were awake at 4:00am CST today to complete the early registration process for the Germany competition. The process required the team to
refresh a website at exactly 12:00 pm Central European Time (5:00 am in Rolla, MO) and take a quiz over the event's rules. The team used a divide and conquer approach
to complete the quiz and secure one of four early registration slots for North American teams. The vehicle will compete in Germany as car #45, which is
the same number the car will campaign at the first event of the season, Formula SAE Michigan. |

Toronto Shootout
The miners had a fantastic showing at the University of Toronto Shootout this past weekend.
Despite drivetrain issues that arose the morning of the race, the team was able to race away from the
problem with help of the University of Akron. Alec Surratt set FTD at 69.22 seconds, over two seconds
faster than the second fastest time of the day. Missouri S&T arrived back home on Sunday evening with
an overall 2nd place finish behind ETS from Montreal and a "Best American Team" award.

2011 Formula SAE West Recap: The 2011 Formula SAE California event was an arduous trial for the Missouri S&T Formula SAE team. Just days before the event, the team had a crankshaft shear in the race engine. It took three solid days of work to get the car ready for the race again. It was completed just in time for the long haul to Fontana. Tech went reasonably well, with just minor attention needed to parts like the chain guard and steering rack. Static events went well, with the team making it to semi finals in the Design portion of the event. Difficulties passing sound prevented the team from reaching their potential in Skidpad and Acceleration. However, Alec Surratt was able to take fifth place in the Autocross event Friday afternoon. Saturday started out well with the team dominating the Endurance event by several seconds per lap. Unfortunately, the success ended at the driver change, when the team was sent off for an oil leak. The team would end up 19th overall. |

General Motors Partnership: Missouri S&T Racing is proud to announce General Motors as a Platinum Sponsor for the 2011 competition season! Our partnership with GM is incredibly valuable to the team both financially and in terms of technical support. The support we receive in the form of both formal reviews and informal feedback is fantastic. We have many alumni at GM and it's great to have such a technologically cutting edge company on board again. "There are some extremely knowledgeable people at GM and it is a privilege to be able to work with and get support from
them." Look for the team at local GM dealerships in 2011. |

Bachman Partnership: Missouri S&T Formula SAE Racing is proud to announce a continuation of our partnership with Bachman Machine Company for 2011. Bachman Machine has been a staunch supporter of the team for more than a decade, providing services and assistance with complex machining operations. Services have included Wire EDM, Waterjet Cutting, and CNC Machining to produce the hubs, wheel centers, and many other parts for the race vehicle. This support gives students the ability to design more complex and innovative parts that would not be manufacturable in-house. Not only does this provide a more enriched and rewarding design learning experience, but allows the students to become more integrated in the manufacturing processes used in industry before graduating. The success of the team in recent years would not have been possible without the generous donation from Bachman Machine. Missouri S&T Racing extends their thanks to Bachman Machine for this donation! |

Goodyear Recap: Missouri S&T placed second in autocross and third in endurance at the Goodyear Shootout in Akron, Ohio this past weekend. This invitation only event allows the top teams in America the opportunity to compete for support from Goodyear Racing. The Miners finished just behind RIT in the autocross. The two teams went head to head in the endurance, with RIT leading before an electrical issue forced them to quit just laps from the finish. However, S&T was unable to hold off Akron and Mizzou in the closing stages of the race and ended in third place. The team overcame a lot of adversity leading up to this event and is proud of this finish. "Given the circumstances, we took a conservative approach. We needed to get a solid finish and take home some tires and that’s exactly what we did." - Tamas Erdos, Chief Engineer This event marks the end of the 2010 competition season and the team will now focus their efforts on constructing and testing the 2011 car for competition next year. |

Toronoto Recap: S&T Racing is proud to announce a third place finish at the Toronto Shootout this past weekend. A handful of top teams,
including last year's Toronto Shootout winner ETS and FSAE West winner RIT, provided stiff competition. The Miners were
plagued by a number of small problems which kept second place out of hand. The team was leading in the early stages of
the race until they were sidelined by a clutch failure. The team did well to repair the clutch and get the car back on
the track allowing them to finish the first race of the season. Junior Alec Surratt turned in the team's fastest lap.
"This event illustrates how races are won and lost before they happen. The success in Toronto had little to do with what happened at the track and everything to with the focused hard work these guys put in in the weeks leading up to the event" -Zach LaGrone (Team Leader)
The team was satisfied with this finish, but is looking forward to performing even better at Akron Saturday, October 2nd. |

Toronoto Drivers Announced: Missouri S&T Formula SAE Racing announces the driver line up for the 2010 Toronto Shootout: Alec Surratt | Junior, Mechanical Engineering Derek Denlinger | Sophmore, Metallurgical Engineering Nick Schweissguth | Senior, Mechanical Engineering Zach LaGrone | Senior, Mechanical Engineering Alec Surratt: "The competition is really tough here. All of the drivers need to post up good times for us to win. We have a solid package of car and very capable drivers. The track in Toronto is one of my favorites. There’s a lot of elevation change, which is uncommon in Formula SAE. The surface is good and the aero package is a definite advantage." Derek Denlinger: "I’m looking forward to the event in Toronto. I’m excited to make the jump to an autocross event, having only done skidpad in the past. I think I’m going to have a great time and learn a lot." Nick Schweissguth: "I’m excited to drive in Toronto. It’s my first drive at an event. I’m proud to accept this role and help support the team." Zach LaGrone: "Toronto is a fantastic event, definitely my favorite on the calendar. Mosport is a great facility. I did my best drive ever at this event last year and I’m really looking forward to going back. It’s a great place to drive and I know all of our guys are really looking forward to it." |

Toronoto Shootout: The Toronto Shootout is less than a week away and the team is heading to Canada with high hopes! Recent testing has focused on improved reliability and driver development. The team is confident they have a package capable of taking the overall victory in 2010. Chief Engineer, Tamas Erdos, "We definitely have a good car and skilled drivers. I expect our team to perform very well. Provided we can reach the full potential of the car, we should finish at the sharp end of the field. A win is certainly possible. The driver’s really enjoy this track. Its one of few chances we get to expose the full performance of our vehicle." The Toronto event is unlike any other on the calendar. High speeds and massive elevation changes make for an exciting event. Click here to learn more about the Toronto event. |

The 2009 competition year will mark our 20th year of involvement with the Formula SAE series. In those 20 years the competition has expanded internationally from just the one competition to seven official competition and nine competitions total; including two more competition in the U.S., Italy, Japan, German, England, Australia, and Brazil. By rough count there are well over 400 teams internaionally now, there are even teams from India who have to travel vast distances to any competition. The team has also seen the growth of the Formula SAE competition from as the record 36 cars in our inagurual 1989 competition to as many as 140 registered cars in the early 2000's. Since 1989 the competition has seen many new design ideas, including; Cornell's sucker car, the first attempt at four wheel steering in FSAE by Western Washington in 1991, and of course the first significant use of wings by ourselves and Michigan in 1991. With these innovations came increased speeds leading to a rule book with more pages than that of the current Formula 1 rule book. What does the next 20 years of Formula SAE hold in store? We'll have to wait to find out for sure, but hopefully there will be multiple World Championships for Missour S&T Racing. |

VIR Friday Update Scores from today and yesterday are in finally. Starting with Thursday's static events; 14th in sales (59.76 out of 75), 4th in cost (88.92 out of 100), and of course design finals which should put us anywhere between 110-150 points. Also, a correction on the finals event, it was held this evening not after endurance as I previously stated. They should release the results tomorrow before endurance. As for today's events; the acceleration course was a bit shorter than it should be judging by the times. The top time was around 2.9 seconds by Maryland as opposed to the 3.9 seconds it usually is. We took home 59.58 points out of the 75 for the event, the most since 2004. In skid-pad we took home only 26.37 points out of 50. The winners of the event were Virginia Tech, however I do not have any official times for skid-pad. Finally, in autocross we took home 2nd place behind Wisconsin-Madison, picking up 146.76 points of the 150. Unofficial Overall Standings of Design Finals Teams (given 110 points for the design event): 1st Wisconsin-Madison: 525.46 |

The team made it through tech inspection, second in line and the first ones to make through. Scrutineering took the team an hour and forty minutes, likely a result of having many rookie teams along with rookie tech inspectors. They were also able to make it through weigh-in today with a weight of 451 lbs, 27 lbs lighter than last year. Tomorrow they look to finish getting the rest of the tech stickers by completing tilt, noise, and brake tests. Also tomorrow will be the sales presentation, cost analysis, and design presentation. There will be no design semis at the VIR event, only design finals which will be held after the endurance event. Check the media gallery for pictures from today later tonight. |
